2017: 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THE ISC

80TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THE ISC

2017 marks the 80th anniversary of the foundation of the ISC in Rome, Italy.

Planning work is under way on my part for a commemorative event in Italy, most probably in Torino.  The city was the workplace of Cesare Lombroso, one of the major founders of current criminology; is the site of the museum displaying the collection of Lombroso during his activities (including his skeleton on display); and is now also a city marked by considerable criminological activity.

As you are aware, the financial situation in Europe is not that stable or prosperous. Recently some Italian banks, including the major one, had to be "rescued"... so we shall see what happens with financial support of an initiative related to the 80th anniversary of the ISC. Any ideas, proposals, suggestions, and... Contributions will be welcome.

I will keep you informed of any major development.

I also encourage you to think about organizing events related to this anniversary or at least to include a prominent mention of it in conferences and other scholarly events in criminology in your country or region.

2017 CRIMINOLOGY FESTIVAL

I am proposing that our distinguished members organize a 'CRIMINOLOGY FESTIVAL" at some point during 2017 at their University, Agency or City to mark the 80th anniversary of the ISC and the advances and contributions of criminology and criminal justice studies... It does not need to be long, one day, one afternoon may be sufficient, and it does not need to be expensive. Please give the matter some thought. This could become a permanent fixture of the calendar connected to the ISC: Criminology Festival or Criminology Day or Day of the Criminologist or similar.... Let us know!!!

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION FOR 1ST, 2ND, 3RD PRIZES, AND HONORABLE MENTION FOR PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE WORLD CONGRESS OF CRIMINOLOGY 2017 & OFFERED FOR PUBLICATION.

INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF CRIMINOLOGY

Emilio C. Viano, President

26 December 2016

Dear Participant in the 18th World Congress of Criminology,

First of all, I want to thank you for attending and taking active part in the 18th World Congress of Criminology recently held in the Delhi Capital Region, India.

Your participation was a key factor in its success. I am glad that the Congress could offer you a great opportunity to showcase your work, obtain feedback from your peers, and contribute to the further development and recognition of Criminology as a scientific endeavor with practical applications.

PUBLICATION OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE CONGRESS

I am writing you today to let you know that the International Society of Criminology (ISC) intends to publish the better papers presented at the Congress. Ideally, all papers may be published. Our plan is to publish as many papers of quality as possible. This will not allow the mass publication of everything presented at the Congress. This would greatly diminish the prestige and credibility of the publication.

You are invited to send your paper as is or revised in light of the comments you received at the Congress for consideration for publication. Please send an electronic copy in Word or RTF format. Do not send a PDF file.

Where to send your paperThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Deadline for sending your paper:  January 10, 2017

Date by which you will learn if your paper will be published (at times subject to

revisions and/or changes, rewrites):  February 28, 2017

To be considered your paper must conform to the general format used for scholarly papers: Title, Full name of the author(s), affiliation and address,

Phone, email, Skype or WhatsApp if available; Abstract; Body of the paper; Bibliography; Brief statement about the Author(s)

PERMISSION TO PUBLISH

Your paper must be accompanied by a signed permission to publish in case your paper is accepted for publication.  Please see the enclosed Consent to Publish form. If your paper is not accepted for publication and/or you do not hear from us by 28 February 2017, the Consent to Publish becomes null and void.

(NOTE: If your paper is received after January 10, it may still be considered at the discretion of the ISC; however the date for notifying you will be automatically extended past February 28 by the number of days past January 10 when the paper is received)

COMPETITION FOR PRIZES AND RECOGNITION

All the papers sent in by January 10, 2017 will be considered for an ISC award distributed as follows:

  1. 3 FIRST category prizes with a purse of US$300 each, a certificate of award, and publication
  1. 5 SECOND CATEGORY prizes with a purse of US$200 each, a certificate of

       Award and publication

  1. 5 THIRD CATEGORY prizes with a purse of U$100 each, a certificate of

Award and publication

  1. Up to 20 HONORABLE MENTION certificates with likely publication.

All papers sent for publication in the Proceedings of the 18th World Congress will be entered automatically in this competition, unless the author specifically declines this opportunity.

Depending on the quality of the papers received, the ISC may not award any or all the

Prizes listed above. The decisions of the ISC are final.

Papers already published do not qualify for this competition.

ACTUAL DELIVERY OF THE AWARD AND CERTIFICATE

The award and certificate will be delivered once the production process of the volume containing the papers so recognized is concluded. This normally occurs when the author approves the final version of the page proofs.  In other words, authors are expected to cooperate in a timely manner with the speedy publication of the material. This cooperation is an integral part of the conditions of the award. The award may be withdrawn should an author choose not to cooperate with reasonable and customary requests for assistance in the editorial and production phases of publication of the book.

TAX RESPONSIBILITY

The recipient of an award that carries a financial prize is responsible for any taxes and other obligations imposed by the State having jurisdiction over the matter.

PUBLISHERS THE ISC WORKS WITH

The ISC normally works with Springer, a quality and prestigious publisher; IOS Press in The Netherlands; Taylor and Francis; Rowman and Littlefield, and others.

MEMBERSHIP IN THE ISC

You are cordially invited to become a member of the International Society of Criminology, the Leading Global Network of Experts Researching and Teaching on Crime, Deviance and Delinquency and their Root Causes, and Providing Criminal Justice Solutions and Innovations, grounded in the full respect of human rights and of the rule of law.

NEWSLETTER OF THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF CRIMINOLOGY
24 DECEMBER 2016
Dear Colleagues,
First of all, I want to wish all of you celebrating them, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2017!!!
I hope that the end of the year and the holidays will give all of us some time to enjoy family time and have some fun!
I wish you and your families the best for 2017!!!

A.   WORLD CONGRESS OF CRIMINOLOGY
The 18th World Congress of Criminology took place as scheduled at the OP Jindal University in the Delhi Capital Region, India from December 15 (Inauguration in the late afternoon and gala dinner for everyone) to December 19
(concluding ceremony in the late afternoon and gala dinner for everyone).
I am happy to let you know that the Congress was a complete success.
While it was smaller in the number of registered participants than the previous one in Monterrey NL, Mexico 2014, it was a sizable meeting. More than 800 persons took part in the
Congress, including about 120 accompanying persons.
The following countries were represented
(*= more than 5 participants; **more than 10 participants; ***more than 20 participants; ****more than 50 participants)
Afghanistan**
Algeria
Bangladesh*
Belgium
Bhutan
Brazil**
Canada**
China***
El Salvador
Finland
Gambia
Georgia
Germany*
Hungary
India****
Indonesia**
Iran*
Italy
Japan
Korea (South)
Lebanon
Liberia
Macao
Mauritius
Mexico*
Mongolia
Morocco*

Nigeria*
Pakistan
Peru*
Philippines
Poland
Portugal
Serbia
Slovakia
South Africa
Spain
Sri Lanka
Sudan
Taiwan
Trinidad & Tobago
Turkey
United Kingdom*
USA***
Zimbabwe
This is an impressive list, taking into account the distance, the cost, the visa requirements, the novelty and the logistics of the destination.

One of the priorities of my service as president of the ISC is to increase the visibility, activity, presence and support for local colleagues and universities by the ISC in the "South." If we look at the list of countries represented, this approach did attract many participants in the ISC Congress that normally do not attend ISC's activities. This is not just a membership growing strategy but a genuine commitment to support the development of Criminology and the success of our colleagues in areas that are often neglected and not recognized as much or as well as the "traditional" countries connected with Criminology work.
I want to thank all those of you who came to India to show their support for the ISC and for our colleagues from the "South" who shared their work with the international community at the Congress. Thank you also to those who came to the Congress representing their country for the very first time at an ISC's international event.
Now, it is up to us to continue welcoming and supporting this expansion of the ISC and the work of our colleagues so that next time we will have even more representation and contributions from all regions of the world.
In other words, we are greatly progressing in making the "international" in the name of our Society a true reality in this globalized world.
Allow me to express my sincere thanks to the Indian colleagues at OP Jindal Global University who worked so hard organizing the Congress. My office and the Jindal's colleagues worked in close collaboration in organizing the event. My office took responsibility for the Scientific Program and Jindal for the logistics, the transfers, accommodations, receptions, food and more. It was hard work especially when hundreds of proposals poured in during the last 45 days prior to the inauguration of the Congress.
As it happened in Monterrey NL in 2014, in this case too all meals and coffee/tax breaks were provided to the participants and accompanying persons every day of the Congress.
We were very fortunate with the favorable weather and thus the inaugural and concluding sessions and all the  dinners took place outdoors in a colorful and inviting open setting combining elegance, good taste, and fun.
High quality cultural and musical entertainment was offered each night and some of them became also a "dancing" party on the third and fourth nights. Please note that the "gala" dinners were open to everybody; no additional fee was required; and everyone was welcome to enjoy delicious food and dance the night away. This was also done at my suggestion to avoid excluding practices based on ability to pay ("gala" dinner) and to especially involve and please the younger participants (music & dancing).
Thank you for your support, advice, suggestions, work and encouragement on this!

B. ACTIVITIES FOR 2017

1. 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THE ISC

2. Criminology Festival
I am proposing that our distinguished members organize a 'CRIMINOLOGY FESTIVAL" at some point during 2017 at their University, Agency or City to mark the 80th anniversary of the ISC and the advances and contributions of criminology and criminal justice studies... It does not need to long, one afternoon may be sufficient, and it does not need to be expensive. Please give the matter some thought. This could become a permanent fixture of the calendar connected to the ISC: Criminology Festival or Criminology Day or The Day of the Criminologist or similar.... Let us know!!!

3. Launch of volume: Cybercrime, Organized Crime, and Societal Responses

During the World Congress, the volume Cybercrime, Organized Crime and Societal Responses, published by Springer, was officially launched during the concluding ceremony. The volume contains the best papers presented in Mexico in 2014 and at the Cybercrime Symposium in Spain in 2015. Congratulations to the many authors members of the ISC whose work appears in the volume.

4. The first volume of the Annals published by Cambridge University Press will appear in 2017, a major achievement for the ISC! It is expected that this event will be launched at the planned official celebration of the 80th anniversary.

5.  Resume work on the Observatory of Criminology and Criminal Justice Programs
As you know, the ISC a few years ago began a valuable initiative: starting an Observatory of Criminology and Criminal Justice Programs.
This is certainly an activity consonant with the "ISC."
Unfortunately, this project has not been very active due to lack of funding, appropriate design and supervision, and, we must admit, below standard execution. Also since time has passed since there was any work done of it in Europe, we will have to start anew, from
scratch so to speak. The current version has little or no value by now. This is a major initiative that my office will undertake on 2017. It is important for the ISC to manage and control this project.

6. The website of the Societyhttps://intercrim.com
We are in the process of updating the Society's website. My objective  is to make it more welcoming, easy to use and interactive. We want to provide you with a major website to showcase your work, support your career, share information and tips, and also just communicate.
While our financial means are very limited, we will do our best to
provide this. I know that you realize that much of what is done for or on behalf of the Society is based on personal sacrifice and hard work.
The best satisfaction to be derived from that is to see the ISC grow and become the premiere international organization we all want and need to grow the profession and make it relevant, especially for our younger members and members from developing countries.

7. Young(er) Criminologists Section

I believe that such section is very important and useful for many reasons, especially to provide our younger colleagues with the support, encouragement, and recognition they deserve and for career advancement and also to grow the ISC.
I did ask the young{er) members of the ISC (as it could be determined from various clues) to work on this project. I had hoped that we could announce some definite activities of this Section in India.
I am asking again the members of this Committee to resume work in 2017 so that we can see the Section operational soon especially on the occasion of the 80th anniversary. It would be a great and tangible contribution to the 80th anniversary celebration.

8. Membership Renewal time
It is that time again.... (for me too!). Please renew your membership to support the Society and also to be in good standing as a member of the leadership of the Society.
A big thank you!!!!

9. Best wishes to Vanja!

Our dear Colleague, Vanja  Bajovic, member of the Scientific Commission, was seriously injured upon arriving in India when the taxi she was riding in collided with a bus in the chaotic Indian traffic. She was seriously injured. I am not comfortable providing more details due to privacy concerns. I can report that, thanks to Jindal University's intervention and kind follow up, she was treated very quickly after the accident at a quality hospital near the University; underwent surgery; and is now recovering well. Many thanks to Jindal University for the care and concern for our member. Our best wishes to Vanja for a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and a prompt reunion with her family in Serbia!!! Thank you, Vanja, for coming to attend the Congress. We are accompanying you during this difficult time with our prayers and best wishes!!! Get super-well soon! Let us know.....
This is all for now. Like many of you, I also have to go and help with Christmas preparations.
To those of you celebrating it, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Stay in touch!!! Your comments, suggestions, contributions... on any of the above are welcome!!! [For contributions, see the ISC's website: https://intercrim.com  There is a "Donate" button!  :-) ]
Thank you for your support of the ISC!!!
Best regards,
Emilio C. Viano
